In this study the ability to detect and exploit nutrient-rich patches of four tropical useful trees (cupuacu, pupunha, castanha-do-Para, urucu) in an agroforestry system in Amazonia (Manaus-AM-Brasil) was examined. Therefore plastic mesh bags filled with nitrate-, phosphate- or magnesium- enriched soil were installed in the field allowing roots up to 5 mm in diameter to grow into. All four species approximately produced the same amount of root biomass in the mesh bags. castanha-do-Para had a wide spread root system and produced 65% of the rots in the mesh bags in the stem area of the neighboring trees. Urucu had the highest root length density (cm root/cm3 soil) by investing the same amount of root biomass, because of a very small diameter of the fine roots and a high specific root length (cm root/g root dry mass). Of the four species urucu exploited the nutrient enriched soil patches most efficient through its high root length density. The strategy of castanha-do-Para consted in a very wide-ranging exploration of the soil. |
